(Nick) Treadmills always kick my ass. There's never a day when I get off a treadmill and feel good about my fitness level. Ran for 25 minutes alternating every 5 minutes from a 8 flat pace to a 7 flat pace. Very tired afterword. And very sweaty.
Looks like the winds arnt gonna pick up till late tomorrow so my Saturday run is a go! Very excited for tomorrow.
(vanessa) I have been working on my 5k. Today went really well. Ate about 4 hours before which was a good idea because I didn't feel nauseous at all even though I pushed myself so hard. I felt good for most of the run, towards the end I took my gps out to hold it because I couldn't press stop early enough. I pressed it and remembered pretty quickly that although my goal was 3 miles under 30, and I had finished in a little over 29 minutes, I did not set a new record for my 5k and was so annoyed that I hadn't remembered that little fact before I stopped running.

March 29th
(Nick) So no running today, but I did find an app to help keep my diet on track. It's basically a calorie counter with my target caloric intake being 2800 a day. I found it to be quite fun to try and hit the benchmark, makes me wanna eat. Let's so how it goes!
Went to the gym and I've lost weight down to 131, yikes!
Pretty much hit my goal today. Let's hope I can continue.

March 28th
(Nick) Went back to the loop for my start of interval training. Didn't exactly goes as planned as I was still full from dinner and tho I drank what I thought was alot of fluids it wasn't enough. My first mile went great and I decided against the interval and to attack my 5k instead, but at mile two my side ache that I get from being dehydrated put an end to my 5k real quick. Gonna rest up, focus on my diet and hydration and try again soon.

March 26th
(Nick) Met up with Vanessa this afternoon to challenge her 5k record. It was alot colder and windier than I had expected it to be. She mapped a new course for us to try that ended up being pretty cool. She started off really well and by the first mile was at 9:40. At the 2.5 mark she was at a 9:50 but the course turned up hill into the wind and fatigue consumed her. Just a half mile away from her record. We walked it off and then jogged back the remaining two miles to the car.
(Nick) going to make an attempt to set a PR on my 5k and depending how I feel at the 3 mile mark possibly a 10k.
Current Record: 22:43
Well it was an extremely frustrating night. I'm very upset with myself. I started off way to fast and ran out of energy too early on. So I stopped and regrouped and gave it another try only to be too fatigued by the half mile mark. I was pissed off! At that moment I just wanted to give up running entirely. Instead of going home really upset I opted to run two laps and add another 6.5 miles to my day.
I've come to realize that me doing better in this next race isn't going to be dependent so much upon my training but upon my diet. I have no energy, no reserve what so ever to pull from and it's all because of my poor eating habits. It freaking frustrates the hell out of me that I can't even eat three meals a day like normal people. It's so dang discouraging.... I'm thinkin about looking into a diet coach or nutrition counselor or something of the sort that will keep me in check with my eating so I can continue to progress.
All in all a crappy night for running due to something as stupid as not eating enough.
(Vanessa)- Today's run was surprisingly hard. We set out again to do 3 miles I under 30 mins. I spent some time finding what i thought would be an ideal route, and I planned to not stop regardless of how bad it hurt and I couldn't even do that. Super disappointed. 2.25 miles hit and I was so done. I couldn't take the wind and I was so thirsty. Then I was just mad that I'd stopped. Running at a faster pace certainly takes a lot out of me. I know it's not out of reach, it's an easy goal. So it's so embarrassing. Will try again tomorrow.

March 23rd
(Nick) had plans to break V's 5k record today but running was very difficult. This last race really beat up my legs. We've gone approx 300 miles in our training this far and I've never experienced pain like this. My soleus is in bad shape, I have shin splints in both legs. I really need to take some time off to recover but it very hard when all I want to do is run.
We found a new little strip of road to run on by the library today, it's always fun to find new spots to train. Probably went about 2 miles today, and it hurt. Alot!
I decided to set goals for the year. I want to do the rock and roll in December and hopefully be able to pull a 1:23 and get a qualifying spot for Boston. I need to shave 20 minutes off my time in the next 8 months. First goal is to pull a 17 minute 5k. Then a sub 36 minute 10k. And eventually 10 miles in one hour. They're big goals but it's where I want to be.
(vanessa) Went out to Valle verde library area for what intended to be 3 miles in 30 minutes. It was a rough start and my knee was hurting so the gps and headphones got turned off a quarter mile in. Nick was feeling equally as messed up today and didnt oppose our shortened route. I dont know how fast or far we ran but hopefully the next one wont be as painful. Definitely wasn't a record breaking day. But we did find a new little path that, combined with the path on the other side of green valley, might make for a nice route (rooooot). We found a cool half for may in California. Is it bad that I mostly just want that cool medal at the end?

March 21st
(Nick) finally made it out to Lake Las Vegas for a run. Was a very scenic and hilly course. Was only able to go 3.5 miles but was a nice way to get back into the groove of running following our last race.
(v)- lake las Vegas doesn't have the distance that we were after. It was a pretty scenic and neat route but we ended up on an old golf course and only ran 3.5 miles. Body felt good though. It'll be nice to run this route at a faster pace because of the hills.

March 17th (Race Day)
{V}- The race went perfect. First of all, I slept well the night before and we arrived with plenty of time to spare so the entire time I felt really relaxed. We started in the back and I didn't even notice nick slip away in the huge crowd. felt great for the entire first half. I was happy that we'd ran it before because I'd made mental landmarks and knew exactly how I'd felt at the same location before & was excited that I was feeling strong and knew I was doing good. Although I carried my iPod, I didn't set the gps to give feedback, which I think was a good idea because I was pleasantly surprised by my time of 2:26. My goal was to get under 2:30. I felt pretty tired towards the second turn around and got passed by a lady in sandals at mile 8 or 9 but I passed her at mile 12. The wind was so bad that I
had to try to keep my balance- at one point the set of feet ahead of me kicked dirt & rocks up and the wind carried it right to my face. Little pebbles hit my cheeks and dirt had gotten in my eyes. And I missed my hat, thinking it could have protected me a little. I finished to see nick right at the finish and he let me know he also beat his goal time. He did so awesome and I couldn't be more proud!!! The event was well organized. Just a ton of people. By the time I finished, all the good snacks were gone. But we drank post race lattes and pizza once we got back to town!! I soaked in a Epsom salt bath and I noticed a difference in my knees immediately. My leg muscles are still pretty sore.
(Nick) Got a total of 3 and half hours of sleep last night. I was tired and nervous on the ride to Boulder City. The weather seemed fine when we got there, over cast with a light breeze. We noticed that this event was so much bigger than the last one we did, soo many people! We lined up in the back, I thought that it would motivate me more to be able to pass people than to start at the front and watch people pass me. The idea seemed great, but with such a narrow course I hit a block of slow moving people and got really frustrated that it was so difficult to pass anyone. At the end of 1 mile GPS alerted me that i was on a 13:20 pace. WTF. Eventually I got through the crowd and started to make up some ground as I hit the first turn around (which was alot sooner than I had expected) we had avoided a windy part that we disliked running on during practice. I got to see V on the way back and she looked very comfortable and was smiling. Once I hit mile 4 I could feel my right lung starting to cramp up really bad. It scared me, I thought I was going to be reduced to walking and give up the time I just gained back. But I pushed through and made a complete stop at the next aid station and made sure to drink to cups of water. That settled my lung and I was again happy with how the race was going. I turned down my music during mile 5 to try and overhear a conversation of the two runners ahead of me. My music and GPS didnt make a sound the rest of the race. I tried to turn it back up and it didnt work. I cut my losses and continued to push myself into the second half of the course. Around mile 7 i caught up to two female runners and had a nice conversation with them till mile 10. It was a nice little mental break and a good distraction. The turn around for the second half was nothing that we've seen before during our recon and was tough as hell. It was so freaking steep!!! I saw V again right at the first tunnel. She looked so comfortable and so happy, I knew shed end up doing well. Everything went fine until I saw the sign alerting me that I had 1 mile remaining. It was a constant argument in my head on whether or not I should slow down and walk the rest or try and keep pushing. I ended up taking the latter and pushed myself to limits ive not experienced before. I was beyond fatigue. I was spent! I crossed the finish line and went straight to find water. I sat down with my water and drank half the bottle in one drink. I layed back for about 5 seconds before i felt a wave of nausea. I immediately got up and grabbed some bananas and muffins and stuffed my face. Ive never been so hungry in my life, i felt like i had to eat or die, it was bad. The wind really picked up on the last leg of the course and i was freezing while I waited for V to come through the finish line. I watched the clock and right around 2:25 I saw her making her way tot he finish. I got really excited, she would break her record and was in much better shape after this race than the last. I never bring water when we trained and rarely drank anything during the last race but was dependent upon the fluids for this one!!! I ended up with a 1:43:19. I did so much better than I ever thought I would. We both accomplished our goals and had a great time doing it. This race was so much fun. I had the best time!!! I cant wait to get back out there and continue to train and find another race we can attend.

March 16th
{vanessa} It's the day before the six tunnels half marathon and I spent most of last night awake obsessing about it. The thing is- I was so tired that I couldn't think straight. I googled running advise, quotes, and discovered that the secret is that there is no secret to running. If there is an underground universe to the running world, I found it last night and it told me to start soaking in epsom salt.
I've spent most of the morning making my playlist, which happens to be one of my favorite things to do. Incase this blog is still up and popping in ten years, I wanted to share some of the songs that always make their way to my playlist in 2012.
Dwight Yokum- 1000 miles from nowhere
Blue oyster cult- don't fear the reaper
No doubt- excuse me mr
Darude- sandstorm
Goo goo dolls- stay with you
Britney spears- I wanna go
Drake- the motto
The cure- boys don't cry
Sponge- plowed
I have 3.7 hours of music but hopefully I'll only need 2:30 of it.
(Nick) Night before the big race. I learned after the last race that taking the day off work after the race is a must. Now I realized that taking the day off before the race is a must. I didn't eat adequately, and spent to much time on my feet at work tonight. I feel frustrated and disappointed that I wasn't able to give this race everything I had prior. Much to work on for the next one. I'm just hoping we have a really fun time and hopefully beat our previous time of 2:42.
Good Luck to us!

March 14th
(Vanessa)-Running is hard. Was thirsty as soon as we started. I need to drink a lot of water for the next few days. The half marathon is 3 days away. I haven't put in the work necessary and feel really shitty about it today. My mood is so much different from when we ran anthem just a couple of days ago. And i know that really determines how far I'll go on Saturday. Hope to get out of this funk quickly.
(Nick) went out to six tunnels today, really wasn't feeling it. Was tired, and felt really out of shape. Also didn't want to push it at all and be sore for the race. Ran half of the first section of the marathon course (quarter marathon lol). Thankfully V was having the same thoughts as I was and didn't seem to disappointed not going very far. Tho she did voice that she'd like to run again after we left, which we didn't do. Three days till the race and the weather on race day is looking pretty dang crappy. Atleast we can get another race under our belt and hopefully see some improvement from the last one. This is the last blog before race day. Eeek!!

March 12th
(Nick) Vanessa was being a winey little bitch this morning!
The weather was kinda funky today, overcast and somewhat windy at times. V really didn't seem to be in the mood to run but after a lengthy discussion we ended up going out and doing half the course. No music again and instead I talked about a movie I watched last night. Time went very fast for me, I was so focused on remembering the facts of the movie that the run was almost over by the time we finished. Felt good afterwards, pretty fatigued for running only a short distance. First time ever that I forgot a cough drop!
(V)- I wasn't feeling it this morning but after a few minutes, I was glad we ended up running. Did 4 miles at an 11:00 pace :/ felt a little faster but whatever. I was entertained by nick telling me about a justin timberlake movie for 47 minutes.

March 10th
(Nick) This has been the biggest gap in our training thus far. Finals and the CPE took place over the last week and so our running had to be sacrificed. V and I both graduated nursing school yesterday! Yay for us! :)
So now that schools over and NCLEX is all we have left we can focus a bit more on our running again. Our race is exactly a week away and its become evident that the two weeks we've taken off have set us back a little.
We met up this morning at the park at 9am to run the full anthem course, something we've been wanting to do for awhile. The weather has been awful the past couple days, but today was sooo nice! High in the upper 60's with a light cool breeze. My body felt great, having taken off for so long gave my body a much needed rest and for the first time in a awhile nothing was sore. We ran today with no music, no gps, no time frame in mind at all. V made the comment later that it was extremely peaceful running with nothing in mind other than just running. No time frames, or speed goals, no music to distract, just us and the road. It was a magnificent run, something the both of us have been looking forward to and needed after all the stress over the past couple weeks.
V duct taped her foot and ended up without any blisters! A major improvement! We both feel pretty sore now after not running for so long but hopefully recovery will come quick.
(V)- Nick summed it up so well. I loved this last run. Running's been put on the back burner for a couple of weeks but its back to becoming a priority for me and today I was reminded how much I want to progress. Just 6 months ago, I would never have thought of southern highlands as an "easy 9 miles." so I kept that in mind when we were doing the hilly course of anthem. here we are- a week away from our second half marathon! Even though I know we haven't put in the work needed for the best run, I am really looking forward to it. -get some bling at the end and a couple good pics. Most of all, I'm looking forward to allowing this hobby to take me further. As I was reminded in our peaceful run, it's treated me well so far.
